I often get asked what I do as a consultant.
I usually answer "Nothing", which is partly true and isn't necessarily a bad thin as we'll see.
There are 3 types of consultants, what I call:
Consultants that do actual work are people with specific job skills that a company is lacking. An example might be a safety engineer. This person would be hired by a firm to complete a specific task in their field. These consultants provide flexibility to firms that only need their services for a short period of time and the service is not part of a companies core values.
Consultants that devise new business models or restructure your business are the "McKinsey's" of the world. These consultants analyze your existing business and develop new business systems to enable companies to more effectively compete in the marketplace. Problem is they don't often follow through with execution. They might say, here are our findings, this is what you need to do, here is our bill and good luck!
Implementation consulting is what we at Embarkonit do. We take the strategy, goal or vision that a company has and work with front line personnel to implement activities that will move the company towards its goal. So most of the time we actually do nothing. The client does all the work. They have the great ideas and knowledge, we just help them focus those ideas, track them and put processes in place to sustain them. Sometimes, when knowledge is missing, we provide training as well.
So my clients laugh when I say "I do nothing", until I say "you will do everything!"
